Zilkzer currently plays for Manchester United in the Premier League and has played for Bologna, Bayern, Parma and Anderlecht.
Born in Schiedam, near Rotterdam, and starting his soccer career at FC Heinkelingen, just a few kilometers southwest of Rotterdam, Zilkzer moved to Spartan 20, south of Rotterdam, in 2010, where he trained for three years before joining, at the age of 12, the youth camp of Dutch Eredivisie club ADO The Hague, which is located about 30 kilometers away from his original training site. After the same three-year stay, Zirkze returned to Rotterdam in 2016 to join Feyenoord, one of the top three Dutch clubs alongside Ajax and PSV Eindhoven.
In late August 2017, he signed with German club Bayern Munich. Zilkzer only played his first game for the Bayern Under-17 ladder in the U-17 Bundesliga South/Southwest on October 29, 2017 under then-head coach Holger Seitz. As a result of his outstanding performances in the Under-17 ladder, the then 17-year-old Zilkzer was allowed to participate with the first team in the preparations for the new season, which included a trip to the United States for the 2018 International Champions Cup with the professional team under new head coach Niko Kovac.
In September 2019, he signed a professional contract until June 2023 with the club.
On August 30, 2022, Zilkzer moved to Serie A club Bologna. On October 16 of the same year, he scored his first goal for the club in a 3-2 defeat against Napoli.
On July 14, 2024, English Premier League club Manchester United announced that Zirkser had joined the club for a reported transfer fee of 36.5 million pounds, with both sides signing a five-year contract until 2029, plus a one-year priority renewal clause. On August 16 of the same year, in the opening match of the Premier League, Manchester United hosted Fulham, and Zirkezer scored on his debut as a reserve substitute, assisting Manchester United to a 1-0 victory over their opponents.
