Speaking to TNT Sports ahead of the upcoming UEFA Cup League Stage 1 first round match at home to Qarabag at 3am BST tomorrow, Tottenham Hotspur striker Son shared his anticipation for the upcoming match and how he feels about becoming the team captain.
Talking about the UEFA Cup race, Son did not hide his desire for the trophy. "We have never been able to touch the goal that we have all been working together for years, but the title is exactly what we have in mind and we will not shy away from that." He emphasized that every player needs to take a huge responsibility as winning this tournament is never easy. "Numerous strong teams are eager to lift this trophy, but we have top players and an exceptional coaching team, which gives us reason to believe that we can achieve something extraordinary." Son described the journey as "tough but enjoyable" and said it would be his ultimate dream to lift the trophy at the end of the season.
A wistful smile spreads across Son's face as he recalls his debut in the UEFA Cup nine years ago. "My first goal came from a great corner combination, Townsend's cross was unbelievable, I just had to push and the ball went in." He mentioned the understanding he had with his brother Ali and lamented how happy he was during those times when we fought together. "Although I missed a great chance to score a hat-trick in the second half, that win meant a lot to me." Son also revealed that when he first arrived at Tottenham, he was eager to prove himself quickly in the Premier League, and although his debut wasn't perfect, he managed to find form and leave a lasting mark in the subsequent UEFA Cup matches.
Talking about his experience of becoming Tottenham Hotspur's captain after Kane's departure, Son said it was a "huge honor". He admits that at the beginning of his career, he never imagined he would become captain of his club or national team, but the status has given him a greater sense of responsibility and mission. "As captain, I have to lead by example and make sure everything is done to the best of my ability." Sun knows how much the young team relies on their captain, but he also enjoys the pressure and challenge. "I love having this responsibility and working under this pressure."
As the UEFA Cup campaign begins, Son is ready to lead Tottenham Hotspur to meet every challenge. His determination, experience and leadership will undoubtedly be an invaluable asset to the team, helping Spurs write a new chapter in the UEFA Cup.
