Hong Myung-bo is a retired South Korean soccer player who plays as a defender on the field and was once considered the best defender in Asia. He is also the only South Korean player to be named to the FIFA 100 list. He is currently the head coach of the South Korean national soccer team.
Hong was a mainstay of the South Korean national team until his retirement, and was the first South Korean player to play in four consecutive World Cup final rounds (Hwang Sun-hong and Lee Un-jae also hold this record from 1990-2002).
After graduating from university, Hong Mingfu joined Korean professional soccer league team Pohang Steelers to start his career, and then joined Shonan Bima in 1997 to play in the Japanese professional soccer league, and then returned to Pohang Steelers to play before the 2002 World Cup.
The 1990 World Cup was Hong Myung-bo's first World Cup for South Korea, and since then he has been a stalwart in the backline and captained the South Korean team. As captain, Hong led Korea to a historic semi-final appearance in the 2002 World Cup, making Korea the first Asian team to reach the semi-finals of a World Cup. He was also honored with the "Bronze Ball Award" for the Korea-Japan World Cup.
He became the first Korean player in the history of Major League Soccer when he joined the Los Angeles Galaxy for the 2003 season and finished his playing career with the Galaxy in late 2004.
Appointed as an assistant coach of the South Korean national soccer team on September 26, 2005, Hong participated in the 2006 FIFA World Cup, the 2007 Asian Cup, and the 2008 Beijing Olympics as an assistant coach of the national team and the national Olympic team. 2009 Hong was the head coach of the National Youth Football Team (NYF) and led the South Korean team to the last eight of the World Youth Football League (WYFL).
He has been the head coach of the South Korean national team since June 24, 2013.On July 10, 2014, Hong Myung-bo suddenly announced his resignation as the head coach of the South Korean team.
In 2016, Hong Mingfu coached Chinese Super League side Hangzhou Greentown, but was relegated to the Central League at the end of that season.
On December 24, 2020, Hong coached South Korea's Ulsan Hyundai of the Korea Professional Football League 1. In 2022, he led the team to the league title.
In July 2024, Hong Myung-bo was once again the head coach of the South Korean national team.
