Hidetoshi Nakata has played for Roma, Parma, Bologna and Fiorentina in the Serie A. He has also played for Fiorentina.

Hidetoshi Nakata is a retired Japanese professional footballer who played as a midfielder and was a member of the former Japan national soccer team, and the Asian Footballer of the Year in 1997 and 1998.

In 1995, he joined the Japanese Second Division team Hiratsuka Bima (now Shonan Bima), and in 1997, he won the best player of the Nippon Professional Football League and was elected as the Asian Footballer of the Year, for which he was nominated in 1998.

In the summer of 1998, Hidetoshi Nakata joined Perugia, a Serie A team that beat Torino FC in the promotion playoffs, for a transfer fee of $4 million, making Nakata the second Japanese player to land in Italy's first division, after Chiryo Miura.

In January 2000, Roma acquired Hidetoshi Nakata for a transfer fee of £13 million, but Nakata played mostly as a backup to Francesco Totti, and won the Serie A title with Roma in the 2000-01 season, with Nakata's crucial goal in the 29th round of Serie A, away to Juventus, equalizing in stoppage time for Roma.

In the summer of 2001, Hidetoshi Nakata made the third move of his career, and although he had been playing reasonably well for Roma, Parma, who finished the 2000-01 season in fourth place in Serie A, paid 18.5 million pounds to sign him. With a transfer fee of 18.5 million pounds, Hidetoshi Nakata became the most expensive player in Japan. In his first season at Parma, Hidetoshi Nakata scored a crucial goal in the 2001-02 Coppa Italia final, helping Parma to win the Coppa Italia on away goals against Juventus.

The years 2001 to 2003 were the outstanding phase of Hidetoshi Nakata's Italian career, after which he moved to Bologna FC and Fiorentina FC.

In the 2005-06 season, Hidetoshi Nakata moved to play for English Premier League club Bolton.
