When it was first bidding for the 2000 Summer Olympics, the Manchester City Council offered a plan to build a stadium with a capacity of 80,000,000. However, Sydney was later awarded the hosting rights and the city council had to use the plan to bid for the Commonwealth Games two years later.
In order to minimize the cost to the City Council, they competed with London's Wembley Stadium for funding to become a national sports stadium, although they lost. But as well as City games, the stadium also hosts other sports, such as rugby.
