Originally playing for Beijing Guoan, Yang Chen was loaned to Mannheim in Bundesliga 2 in May 1998, and then transferred to Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga for 1 million marks on July 1. He made his Bundesliga debut for Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga on August 14, and scored in the league match against Borussia Mönchengladbach on September 8, becoming the first Chinese player to score a Bundesliga goal, and the first goal scored by a Chinese player in one of Europe's top five leagues.
