Born in Marseille, France, Cantona is a retired French footballer and one of the legendary stars of French soccer, known as "The Old Trafford Great" or "Jane the Great" for his amazing performances for Manchester United. Cantona ended his career as a footballer with Manchester United after winning the Premier League four times in five years, including two Premier League and FA Cup doubles (1994 and 1996), and was voted England's Footballer of the Year in 1996 and Player of the Century in 2000.
After playing for French clubs such as Auxerre and Marseille, Cantona moved to England to join Leeds United in 1991, winning the league title in his first season. In November 1992, Cantona moved from Leeds United to Manchester United for a transfer fee of one million pounds.
Cantona joined Leeds United in January 1992 officially. Leeds paid Nimes Olympic £100,000 for the loan until April 15, after which they would pay an additional £900,000 to make the move permanent. Cantona made his Leeds United debut on February 8, 1992, when he was appointed to the club.
In May 1997, Manchester United defended their Premier League title, and it was also the fourth time that Cantona led his team to win the Premier League title and his fifth individual English top flight title. But on the eve of his 31st birthday, Cantona suddenly announced his retirement without explanation.
