Introduction to the Russian Premier League

The Russian Premier League is a professional soccer league organized by the Association of Russian Football Federations, commonly referred to as the "Russian Premier League". It is the first level of the Russian soccer league system since the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, the highest level of the league and the top Russian soccer league, which consists mainly of clubs in Russia.

Under the current system, the Russian Premier League consists of 16 teams, with the two teams with the lowest points in the league table being relegated to a lower league, called the Russian National Football League. The two teams with the lowest points in the league table are relegated to the second division, called the Russian National Football League, while the highest-scoring team in the Russian First Division is promoted to the Russian Premier League. The format is the same as other European soccer leagues, with 30 rounds of home-and-away matches. Winning, drawing and losing are scored as 3, 1 and 0 points respectively, with the highest scoring team being crowned champion at the end of the season, while ties are decided by comparing each other's records. Traditionally, due to the climate, matches in the Russian Premier League are not played across the year as in other major European leagues, but rather from March to November within the same year as in other Nordic countries. However, the Russian Football Association plans to change the season to fall to spring in the future, and has already begun the 2012-13 season, making the 2011-12 season a transitional period: the season will run from spring 2011 to summer 2012.

Spartak Moscow and Zenit have won the most titles in the Russian Premier League since its inception, with a total of 10 each. In recent years, a number of strong teams have also won the title, including CSKA Moscow, Lokomotiv Moscow and Ruby Kazan.

Depending on the number of points scored in Europe, the winner of the Russian League in 2021-22 will be admitted directly to the group stage of the Champions League, while the runner-up team will be offered a place in the third round of the UEFA Europa League qualifiers (in the non-league winner's category). The third and fourth place teams in the league are entitled to participate in the third and second rounds of the UEFA Europa League qualifiers, respectively. In addition, the winner of the Russian Cup qualifies for the group stage of the Europa League. So far, Russia's highest honors in Europe have been two European Union Cup titles, won by CSKA Moscow in 2005 and Zenit in 2008.
