Why is the Golden Glove called the Yashin Award?

What's the Yashin Prize?

The Yashin Award is a Golden Glove award honoring former Soviet goalie Lev Yashin.

Yassin died in 1990 due to complications from an earlier knee injury and amputation. To commemorate his life's work, FIFA established the "Yassin Prize" to be awarded to the goalkeeper with the most outstanding performance during the final week of the World Cup.

Yashin was a Soviet soccer player and goalkeeper, 190 centimeters tall, wearing an all-black jersey in goal, known as the "Black Panther" for his outstanding saves, and the "Black Spider" or "Octopus" for his long arms. Octopus".

Throughout his life, Yashin played only for Dynamo Moscow, winning the Soviet Union League Championship five times and the USSR Cup three times from 1949 to 1971. In his early years, Yashin played goalie for Dynamo's ice hockey team, which won the 1953 USSR Ice Hockey League title, after failing to get a regular spot on the soccer team.

Called up to the national team in 1954, Yassin played 78 matches for the national team, winning the 1956 Olympic gold medal in Melbourne and the 1960 European Cup of Nations. Yashin played in three World Cup final weeks (1958, 1962 and 1966) and, due to his experience, made his fourth appearance in 1970, playing as third choice goalkeeper and advising the team, keeping the team scoreless in four of their 13 World Cup final week matches, with his final match being against Eurostars in Moscow in 1971 by Dynamo Moscow.

Yassin is the only goalkeeper to date to have won the honor of European Footballer of the Year (1963). He is estimated to have saved around 150 penalties during his playing career, far more than any other goalkeeper in history. He was awarded the Order of Lenin in 1967.
