At 3:00 a.m. Beijing time on October 3, Liverpool will usher in the second round of the UEFA Champions League stage, hosting Bologna. Before the match, Liverpool defender Robertson accepted an interview with The Athletic, expressing his views on the intensive schedule.
Robertson said that the addition of extra tournaments such as the Champions League and the Club World Cup in the new format has put a heavier burden on the players. He noted that the players don't seem to have much say in the matter, and are just scheduled to play soccer, which is frustrating for them. Robertson emphasized that the players love to play soccer and to give the fans a great game, but when they are overworked, they sometimes can't do that.
Speaking about his limping off the pitch after the game against Wolves, Robertson said he was all right and revealed that Liverpool's medical team are now placing more emphasis on recovery to try and reduce the number of injuries this season. So far, so good.
Earlier, Liverpool teammates Rodney and Alisson had also complained about the intensive schedule in an interview. Robertson said that they will continue to do so as there is no other option. He mentioned that the players will let others discuss the issue and try to get help. However, he also believes that in the future, it would be best to get the players together and ask for their opinions because there are plenty of seasoned professionals and captains who can speak on these matters. Robertson emphasized that it would be wise to ask those who really feel what it's like to play football every week, rather than just relying on someone sitting in an office.
Facing the upcoming Champions League matches, Robertson said that despite the tight schedule, the players will still give their best to fight for the victory. He expects Liverpool to give their fans a great game at home.
