Manchester City are set to face Bratislava away from home in the second round of the UEFA Champions League stage on October 2 at 3:00 am BST. In his pre-match press conference, City player Stones shared his expectations for the game and spoke about a possible return to the midfield position.
On the possibility of returning to the midfield position he played in the 22-23 season, Stones said, "I'm 100% willing to do that if I have to! I've been in the midfield position a lot in the last two years. the 2023 Champions League final was a bit difficult for me because I was further forward, which was new for me, but I enjoyed that challenge. Whatever position I'm asked to play, or whoever plays in midfield, I've had similar experiences before and understand what the manager wants. I hope we can recreate more exciting moments than the Champions League final."
Asked about his communication with teammate Rodney, Stones revealed, "I've spoken to Rodney and he's in great shape and in great spirits. He's now aware of the recovery process, has come to terms with it and seems to be in good spirits, which I'm pleased about. He's now in Spain with his family and needs to take some time to relax and get as fit as possible."
Speaking about what it's like to play in midfield, Stones said he really enjoys the position: "It requires you to have a completely different view of the game and is a compliment to the players who play there. It's a compliment to the players who play there. It's great to see how the midfielders understand the game and learn when to receive the ball and when to pass it from a defender's point of view, and I appreciate the players who play in the midfield a lot. I've always enjoyed playing that position and I try to improve and do my best every time I play in the midfield. I think what the coach expects from us is to go out there and show what we can do because he put us there for a reason, and then it's about us doing our job."
Regarding playing time this season, Stones said he is ready to fulfill whatever role Guardiola gives him: "100% ready. We know how long the season is going to be, how many games there are, and we're all going to play important roles in the season. The key is to be ready and take your chances. Guardiola rotates his squad a lot and being ready and staying fit is a big priority for us this season. I think that's why we've been so successful over the years, everyone has contributed massively to our victories and played when needed."
Stones also gave an example of the importance of preparation: "For example, in the game against Arsenal, when I came on as a substitute and ended up scoring the winning goal, that's when I was ready. Other players do the same! I want us to play in every game, but we have an incredible squad with a very intense schedule and we have to be ready for the games Guardiola wants us to play in."
