In Liverpool's 5-1 win over West Ham United in the EFL Cup, 21-year-old Morton had his moment to represent Liverpool's first-team after two and a half years. He came on as a substitute in the 82nd minute of the game and showed what he is made of. Two days later, he played for Liverpool U21s in a 3-0 win over Arsenal, where a free-kick cross set up his teammate's opener and he scored on a counter-attack.
Morton has spent the last two seasons on loan at Blackburn Rovers and Hull City, an experience that has helped him immensely and given him the valuable experience he needed to return to Liverpool. In an interview, he expressed his gratitude for the experience and said that he is determined to seize every opportunity to continue growing at Liverpool, one of the world's top clubs.
Speaking in the latest edition of Liverpool's Matchday Field Journal, Morton said that he is proud of what he has achieved so far but is more focused on the future, thinking about what he can do next and how he can make a significant step forward at this club. He admits that he likes the healthy competition within the Liverpool team and believes that it is one of the biggest clubs in the world and it is an honor to play here.
Speaking about the experience of playing under new boss Slaughter, Morton said it has been great and although different in many ways, it has been positive. He praised the manager for making a strong tactical imprint and felt it was a huge credit to the coaching staff. Morton also revealed that he is learning to play in both the No. 6 and No. 8 roles in midfield, which is a must as a Liverpool player. He appreciated the fact that the manager has changed his style of play and helped him develop himself in situations he didn't have the chance to face when he used to play only as a No. 6.
Morton recalls the moment he made his first appearance for Liverpool with great emotion. He made a total of nine appearances for Liverpool that season, both in the Premier League and Champions League. Now, three years on, he feels he has matured a lot both in soccer and personally. Morton believes that those games representing Liverpool gave him a lot of confidence and gave him the opportunity to go on loan to Blackburn and Hull City, experiences that were great growth opportunities for him.
In closing, Morton expressed great expectations for the future. He appreciated those who truly wanted him to improve and to reach this position, and said that these last few years have been some of the best of his life, and may it continue.
