In an interview, Bulgarian soccer star Berbatov shared an important transfer decision in his career. He revealed that he once turned down an offer from Manchester City in order to join Manchester United. Berbatov said, "On the last day of the transfer market, Manchester City made me an offer, but I firmly told my agent that we were going to Manchester United. United's history, prestige, player squad and coaching team convinced me that going to Old Trafford was the right decision and I never had the slightest doubt about it."

Recalling his first experience of joining Manchester United, Berbatov made special mention of the scene when Sir Alex Ferguson personally picked him up at the airport. He said emotionally, "When I stepped out of the plane and suddenly saw Sir Alex Ferguson, I was shocked and even a bit scared. All I could think about was how to communicate with him, how to address him, and whether I would look awkward. But Sir Ferguson was very friendly and he allayed all my concerns. He took us to the Carrington training base and that journey felt like a science fiction adventure. I was completely blown away and didn't even know what to say. Even though I was tired at the time, that day was perfect for me because I had worked so hard to get to Manchester United."

Berbatov also spoke about his glory years at Tottenham and said that it was always his dream to join Manchester United. He said, "My time at Tottenham Hotspur was great performances, I had a remarkable season and started to attract the attention of some of the top clubs in the world. Even though I come from a small country like Bulgaria, in my heart I have always dreamed of climbing my own mountain and Manchester United is that pinnacle. I knew this train would only pass by once in my life and I didn't want to let it pass. It's hard to say goodbye to Tottenham Hotspur and I know I'll disappoint a lot of people, but sometimes in life you have to make a decision to follow your dreams."
