Liverpool star Mark Lawrenson recently spoke out on a program about the key contract extensions in the squad and the race for the Premier League title this season, highlighting in particular the importance of Dutch center back Van Dyke to Liverpool.
Mark Lawrenson said, "Of the three core players Liverpool need to extend - Van Dyke, Arnold and Salah - I think Van Dyke is the most crucial. His skills are important, but the support he gives the team in the dressing room and his leadership on the field is irreplaceable. Van Dyke is not only the backbone of the defense, but also the spiritual leader of the team. If he leaves, it will be a huge loss for Liverpool."
Laurenson further stated, "We have seen that during Van Dyke's injuries, Liverpool's other center backs could not fully replace him. Van Dyke's consistency and leadership is crucial for the team. If he is able to stay at the club for a long period of time, it will have a long-term beneficial impact on the team."
Meanwhile, Lawrenson admitted that the departure of any of the three players would cost Liverpool astronomical transfer fees in terms of bringing in replacements. "They are all world-class players with extremely high transfer values. If they choose to leave, Liverpool will have to pay a huge price to find suitable replacements."
Speaking about the Premier League title race this season, Laurenson believes that Liverpool are expected to end the season in second place, ahead of Manchester City. "I've observed that Manchester City are facing all sorts of problems on and off the field, while Arsenal look hungry and combative. They really believe this is their season, so I think it will be tough to end the season above them."
Additionally, Lawrenson also recognized the addition of Chiesa Jr. to the roster. "Once Chiesa Jr is in the starting line-up he will be very difficult to replace. He was excellent when he came on as a substitute against Bournemouth last weekend and looks like a very good deal for Liverpool at the moment. Of course, his injury record is an issue, but Liverpool can cope with that as they have a number of different players up front. I think Junior Chiesa understands the position he is in and he will be very helpful for the club."
