Following Manchester United's 0-3 home defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, the future of manager Jens Ten Hagar is in question. The Manchester Evening News published an article stating that if United finally decide to sack Ten Hagar, former United legend striker Ruud van Nistelrooy could become the team's interim manager, but he should not be considered as a candidate for the long-term manager as he is not a world-class coach at the moment.
Van Nistelrooy never thought he would take up coaching after his retirement, nor did he consider coaching Manchester United. However, something inside him drove him to coaching, and he had a good run of success at the start of his coaching career. In 2023, he led PSV Eindhoven to the Dutch Cup, and was in talks to coach Burnley, but ultimately chose to join the coaching staff at Ten Hagar.
With Ten Hagar in a critical situation, the possibility of Fanny as interim manager has been obvious since he became first team coach in July. If Ten Hagar is sacked, Fanny is expected to take charge of United on an interim basis, giving him the chance to lead the team on at least for the season.
Vanney was a legendary striker for Manchester United during his playing days and his addition is considered to be an astute addition to the Ten Hagar coaching staff. He has been praised by the players, who have enjoyed working with the United legend. However, while he may be a solid choice as interim manager, fans are divided over whether he is likely to become the official manager of United.
The Manchester Evening News suggests that Fanny does not currently possess sufficient credentials for the role of full United manager. He bears a clear resemblance to Solskjaer, who was appointed as United's interim boss after Mourinho's sacking and led the team to a significant improvement over a period of time. However, Solskjaer wasn't a world-class coach either, as he did a respectable job at the helm of United in the post-Ferguson era but didn't win trophies, and ultimately his tactical shortcomings led to his tearful departure.
Fanny knows Manchester United as a club, which is really a big advantage for him. However, he is currently inexperienced having only coached the adult team for one season. United's new boss, Sir Ratcliffe, wants the team to be top class and will therefore adopt the same high standard strategy when choosing Ten Hagar's successor. Fanny, while potentially improving the team's performances as an interim manager, should not be considered as a candidate for a long-term managerial role.
If Ten Hagar eventually leaves United, Fanny will obviously be the favorite to take over on an interim basis. However, United need a world-class coach to lead the team to a higher level, which Fanny does not have at the moment. Therefore, when looking for Ten Hagar's successor, United will need to be more cautious in considering candidates.
