Former West Ham United star Di Canio has questioned United manager Jurgen Ten Hagar's transfer decisions this summer following United's 0-3 home defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the last round of the Premier League. Di Canio specifically expressed his dismay at Ten Hag's decision to sell McTominay and bring in Ugarte at a higher price.

In an interview with Sky Sport Italia, Di Canio said, "How can you sell McTominay for 30 million euros and then spend 50 million euros to bring in Ugarte? It's true that Ugarte has had a great run at Sporting Portugal, but the Premier League is another matter. The pace of play, the physicality of the game and the weather conditions in the Premier League are all significantly different from Portugal. It's only 10 degrees in Manchester today and it's been raining for 10 days, while it's 25 degrees in Lisbon."

Di Canio further noted that Ten Hagar doesn't seem to be too interested in English players when it comes to bringing in reinforcements. He mentioned, "Ten Hag doesn't seem to like English players, he signed Hoylen last year and brought in Zirkerze this year. While Zilkzer may have excelled in the Italian league, his physicality is not an advantage in the Premier League." As a comparison, Di Canio mentioned Tottenham's signing of Solanke: "Solanke is a good but not a top player, however he is really an okay player who can contribute to the team."

Finally, Di Canio expressed his disappointment with United's performance in the game, "I was very sorry to see Ten Hagar in such a difficult situation. Whenever the team conceded a goal, they seemed to have no reaction, no one looked up to observe the situation on the field or to communicate with each other. This lack of communication and reaction made United look very passive in the game."
