Number of timeouts that can be requested for CBA games
Number of timeouts in CBA games
The number of timeouts in CBA games is as follows:
Regular pause:
Looking at the first and second halves as a whole, each team is allowed a total of two (2) Conventional Timeouts in the first half (1st and 2nd quarters); and a total of four (4) Conventional Timeouts (including brief stoppages) per team in the second half (3rd and 4th quarters). Therefore, the maximum number of time-outs per team in a game is 6.
There are specific regular timeout requirements during each quarter of the game. For example, in the first and third quarters, there must be two 100-second time-outs each (one for the home team and one for the visiting team); and in the second and fourth quarters, there must be three 100-second time-outs each (one official, one for the home team, and one for the visiting team). The extra timeout in the second and fourth quarters comes at the 8:59 mark.
OFFICIAL TIMEOUT: There will be one official timeout in each quarter of a game, with each timeout lasting 90 seconds. If neither team calls a timeout prior to 6:59 remaining in the period, an official timeout will be called at the first opportunity for a timeout after 6:59 inclusive and will not be registered in either team's name; if either team is granted a timeout prior to 6:59 remaining in the period, there will be no official timeout for that period.
SHORT STOP: Each team has one short stop in the first and second halves, but a short stop in the first half is nullified if it is not called for the second half; overtime is used as an extension of the second half, so a short stop in the second half can be used in overtime. The duration of a stoppage is 20 seconds.
In addition, each team is limited to calling two timeouts (not including short stops) in the fourth quarter and the last two minutes of each overtime period. In addition, any unused timeout in the 48-minute period is not valid for overtime. Therefore, the total number of time-outs for two teams in a CBA game is 18, i.e. two official time-outs, 12 regular time-outs, and four short stops.
The history of official CBA suspensions is as follows:
When Introduced:The official CBA moratorium was introduced for the 2019-2020 season. On or about October 23 or 24, 2019, the CBA League announced the new rule at a press conference for that season.
Rule content:
During a game, there is one official timeout per quarter and each timeout is 90 seconds long.
If no team calls a timeout during the first 5:59 of a period (i.e., 6:59 before the end of the period), the CBA will take an official timeout, which will not be registered in either team's name, when the first opportunity for a timeout arises after the 6:59 mark, inclusive; if a timeout is granted to either team prior to the 6:59 remaining in the period, there will be no official timeout for that period. There will be no official timeout in the tiebreaker period.
Purpose of introduction: This is mainly a practice of the CBA to "benchmark" the NBA, the purpose is to use the pause time to arrange for live TV to broadcast advertisements and cheerleading performances, to enhance the commerciality and entertainment of the CBA league. The advertisements can bring more commercial income for the league, and the cheerleading performance can increase the fun of the game and enhance the viscosity of the fans.
Subsequent Adjustment: In the 2021-2022 season, the CBA League canceled the official suspension rule in accordance with the requirements of the Chinese Basketball Association's directive on the CBA's rule implementation level and in light of the actual situation of the league. The Official Suspension Rule has not been reinstated in the subsequent seasons (as of September 2024).
