The head coach of the NBA Pistons is John Blair "J.B." Bickerstaff.
On July 4, 2024, the Pistons officially announced that Bickerstaff has officially become the team's head coach. Bickerstaff has extensive coaching experience, having served as an assistant coach or head coach for the Charlotte Bobcats, Minnesota Timberwolves, Houston Rockets, Memphis Grizzlies, and Cleveland Cavaliers. Before coming to the Pistons, he had a stellar coaching stint with the Cavaliers, helping the team win its first series in the post-James era. However, Bickerstaff was fired by the Cavaliers after the Cavaliers defeated the Celtics 1:4 in the second round.
On September 24, 2024, the Pistons announced the names of Bickerstaff's assistant coaching staff, with Luke Walton, Sidney Lowe, Fred Vinson, Vitaly Potapenko, Kevin Burleson, Jerome Allen, and Josh Estes named assistant coaches, while Jarrett Jack and Steve Scalzi stayed on.
The NBA Pistons have had numerous past head coaches, here are some of the more notable ones:
Chuck Daly: Coached the Pistons from 1984 to 1992 and was a decorated coach. He built the Pistons, known as the "Bad Boys", into a tough, hard-nosed defensive team. Under his leadership, the Pistons won two NBA championships in 1989 and 1990, making Daly one of the most respected coaches in the league.
Larry Brown: Head coach of the Pistons from 2004 to 2005. A defensive and team-oriented coach, the Pistons defeated the "F4" Los Angeles Lakers in the 2004 NBA Finals to win the championship.
Flip Saunders: Coached the Pistons from 2006 to 2008. He had a high winning percentage during his time with the Pistons, and his coaching style emphasized offensive fluidity and teamwork.
Stan Van Gundy: Coached the Pistons from 2015 to 2018. He made some adjustments and reforms to the team's roster and tactical system during his tenure, but the team's performance did not make a major breakthrough.
Dwane Casey: Coaches the Pistons from 2019 through 2023. He had a good run with the Toronto Raptors and has worked hard to improve the team's performance since coming to the Pistons.
Monty Williams: Coached the Pistons in 2024, but was fired in June 2024 by the Pistons. He had a great record with the Suns and had high hopes for the Pistons, but ultimately failed to lead the Pistons to the desired results.
J.B. Bickerstaff: In July 2024, Pistons officials announced that Bickerstaff had officially become the team's head coach
