September 23, 2009 - The national football team's opponent has changed its coach! It's official, Tony Popovic will be the head coach of the Australian national team.

Australia lost 0-1 to Bahrain and drew 0-0 with Indonesia in a World Cup qualifier in September.Head coach Arnold, who had been in charge for six years, resigned on September 20th.

Popovic, who is expected to officially take office tomorrow, is currently discussing the composition of the national team with other members of the team.

Originally from Sydney, Popovic, 51, is a former center back who played in the 2006 World Cup. Since retiring, he has coached the Western Sydney Wanderers, Perth Glory and Melbourne Victory, among others.In 2014, he led the Western Sydney Wanderers to become the first Australian club to win the AFC Champions League.

On Oct. 10, Popovich will host the Chinese men's soccer team for the first time since taking charge of the team.
