Iversen, 35, has been in the Chinese Super League (CSL) for 11 years. the Brazilian striker joined CSL juggernaut Guangzhou Evergrande (now renamed Guangzhou) from Brazil's Botafogo in the 2013 season for a fee valued at €5.7 million. During his first stint with Guangzhou, he helped the team win three Chinese Super League titles and two AFC Champions League titles, and in the 2013-14 season, he won his second consecutive Chinese Super League Golden Boot award!
Since then, Ickerson moved to Shanghai Port, helping the team win the first Chinese Super League title in the club's history in the 2018 season. In the summer of 2019, Ickerson returned to Guangzhou Evergrande and soon completed the naturalization process to become a naturalized player. Soon after, he was selected to represent the national soccer team in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in Qatar.
For well-known reasons, Ickerson terminated his contract with Evergrande FC at the end of 2021 and returned to Brazil to join Barclays Premier League side Gremio. Just a year later, Ickerson returned to the Chinese Super League, joining Chengdu Rongcheng, where he played until this season.
With age, Aixon's form is not as good as it used to be. Especially this season, he only played 8 games for Chengdu Rongcheng and scored 2 goals. Due to injuries, Eckerson has not been in the team's roster since July and has lost his place in the national team.
With his contract with the club expiring at the end of this year, Ickxon left the team early to return to Brazil for surgery, meaning his career with Chengdu Rongcheng has come to an end. In his two seasons with Chengdu Rongcheng, Iverson only scored 10 goals and two assists, far from his peak performance at Guangzhou Evergrande.
Although Ickerson will turn 36 next year, the veteran still has no plans to retire. According to reports, he is likely to return to Guangzhou next season to join his old former club and end his career there.
After two seasons of hibernation in the Chinese First Division, Guangzhou are now starting to re-emerge with young players who have grown up and are doing quite well in the Chinese First Division this season, currently sitting fourth in the table. If the Chinese Super League team is relegated due to penalties this season, then Guangzhou will likely return to the Chinese Super League next season.
However, joining Guangzhou for the third time is just a personal idea of Eckerson. Whether Guangzhou can afford his high salary will be a big question. As to whether the naturalized general can return to Guangzhou next year as he wishes, let's wait and see!
