New Zealand's highest soccer league
The New Zealand Football Championship, abbreviated as NZFC, is a semi-professional national soccer league in New Zealand, organized by the New Zealand Football Association. Founded in 2004, the league operates differently from the club winter season. Many local clubs join together to form a local representative team to participate in the NZFC; similar to the Australian A-League and Major League Soccer, there is no promotion or relegation in the league. The tournament excludes the Wellington Phoenix, who play in the Australian A-League, and the defunct New Zealand Knights
Teams. The league is an eight-team tournament, with each team playing a triple round robin against each other. The top three teams at the end of the regular season advance to the playoffs, which changed to a double round-robin between each club and the top four teams advancing to the playoffs from the 2008-09 season. Replaced by the New Zealand National League from the 2021-22 season.
