Who was the player who was shot?

Colombian player Escobar was shot in his home country.

Escobar is best known for creating an own goal in the 1994 World Cup soccer match against the United States, which knocked Colombia out of the tournament. A number of drug dealers who were betting on the game lost their money as a result. Shortly after returning home, Escobar was shot and killed as a result.

On June 22, 1994, Colombia met the United States in the first round of the World Cup. Escobar inadvertently set himself up in order to block a cross from U.S. midfielder John Harkes, and the U.S. eventually eliminated Colombia 2-1. After the World Cup, Escobar decided to return to Colombia instead of visiting relatives in Las Vegas.

On July 1, 1994, the fifth day after Colombia was eliminated, Escobar asked a friend to go to the town of Poblado, Medellín. They entered a bar and a liquor store, and then went to a nightclub called "El Indio". His friend left him around 3:00 a.m. the next morning, and Escobar went alone to the parking lot of the club. Three males appeared and began arguing with him. Two of them drew handguns and fired a total of 12 bullets, six of which hit Escobar. According to reports, the killers mimicked South American soccer commentators, shouting "Goal!" (¡Gol!) Escobar's killers used a .38 caliber handgun. The killers then left Escobar bleeding and left the scene in a Toyota pickup truck. Escobar was rushed to the hospital where he died 45 minutes later.

Escobar's killer, Humberto Castro Muñoz, who was working as a bodyguard for a powerful Colombian company at the time of the murder, was arrested by the police on the same day and confessed to Escobar's murder the following day. Muñoz was also a driver for Santiago Gallón, who at the time had placed a large bet on the Colombian team and was distraught over the loss of the money. In June 1995, Muñoz was guilt-ridden over Escobar's murder. Muñoz was found guilty and sentenced to 43 years in prison, which was later commuted to 26 years by authorities in 2001. He was released after 11 years (2005) due to his good work and academic performance during his sentence, but his release was widely disputed.
