Spain drew 0-0 with Germany at halftime after hitting the post twice, and the teams combined for just six actual shots in the first 45 minutes.
Spain was the first to strike as the sides battled again. In the 59th minute, Del Castillo took a low shot from the front of the box that slipped slightly out of play, but then they conceded the first goal. In the 65th minute, keeper Cali clattered into an attacking handful of knives before Gwynne nodded home to give Germany a 1-0 lead! In the 70th minute, the increasingly in-form Germany had another one-two chance when Hüller received a diagonal pass from a teammate and burst into the box again, but her shot was parried away by the goalkeeper.
In the ensuing game, Spain continued to control the ball, with real-time possession reaching 66% at one point, but the team never really threatened the goal. Finally, at the end of the entire match, Germany defeated Spain 1-0 and won the bronze medal!
