Gamba Osaka is a Japanese professional soccer club, one of the teams in the Japan Professional Football League, which won the "Triple Crown" of the J-League, J-League Cup and Emperor's Cup in 2014.
The team's predecessor was the Panasonic Industrial Football Division. In 1991, the team joined the Japan Professional Football League (JPFL) and changed its name to Gamba Osaka, and in 1993, it was one of the 10 teams that participated in the JPFL. The team is based in Suita City, Osaka Prefecture, and its home ground is Osaka Manbo Memorial Stadium. When J-League was founded, it was the only team based in Kansai. The team's name, Gamba, has two meanings: in Italian, it means foot, and in Japanese, it means effort.
After 13 years in the J-League, it wasn't until 2005 that the team won its first professional league title since its founding. Since then, the team has won the League Cup and Emperor's Cup in succession, and won the Asian Champions League in 2008, truly growing into a powerhouse.
2014 was Gamba Osaka's first season back in the first division. The team finished in 15th place with 2 wins, 3 draws and 5 losses in the first 10 rounds of matches, but thanks to Takashi Usami's comeback, the team gradually improved and reached the 2nd place in the league by the end of the season, and was in a strong position to win the league title. The team also won their first Japan League Cup since 2009, beating Sanfrecce Hiroshima 3-2 in the final on November 8th. In the final round of the league, the team was tied on points with Urawa Red Diamonds, who had been at the top of the table for half a season, but Urawa's home defeat allowed Gamba Osaka to take the league title, and on December 14, Gamba Osaka became the first team ever to be promoted to win three local championships in Japan when they defeated Yamagata Yamagami, a Division 2 team, 3-1 in the final of the Emperor's Cup.
