System and Organizer

Organizer: Japan Football Association, Japan Professional Football League

Co-organizers: Nihon Hōsō Kyōkai, Kyōkai News Agency

Director: Prefectural Soccer Associations

Each round of the tournament is decided by a single game, and in the event of a tie within the legal time limit, extra time will be required to decide the winner. If the match is not decided in overtime, a penalty shootout will be held.

In the 2017 format, the 47 teams represented by prefectures and the best amateur teams from the previous season start in the first round, while the entirety of the Nippon Professional Soccer League and the Japanese Second Division will start in the second round.

Both the semi-finals and the final are held on neutral ground. The finals have traditionally been scheduled for January 1, with some exceptions, such as the 94th and 103rd finals, which were moved forward to accommodate the Asian Cup, and the 102nd final, which was moved forward to October 16, 2022, to accommodate the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Also from 2017, the right to play at home from the third round to the quarter-finals is granted in principle to the team in the lower division (or lower ranking in the same division). However, if the home stadium is not suitable for the match or if the opposing teams include teams participating in the AFC Champions League, the organizers may designate another venue for the match.
