The knockout stages of the 2024 Asian Cup continued as West Asian powerhouse UAE welcomed dark horse Tajikistan. However, no one thought this seemingly very different duel was very anxious and the two sides had to go through a brutal penalty shootout to separate the results. Tajikistan beat the UAE 6-4 to reach the last eight of their first ever Asian Cup!
When it comes to Tajikistan, few fans have heard of them before the Asian Cup. Because in the previous Asian soccer, this Central Asian team is a real "fish belly", hardly make any storm. This small country with a total population of only 10.32 million is better at wrestling than soccer. But at the Asian Cup in Qatar, Tajikistan made history!
In the group stage, Tajikistan, who were playing in the Asian Cup for the first time, were assigned to China's Group A, which included hosts Qatar and Lebanon. After losing 0-1 to Qatar in their three group matches, Tajikistan went undefeated in their remaining two matches, winning one and drawing one. They eventually defeated the Chinese men's soccer team to win second place in this group and earn a ticket to the round of 16.
In the first round of the knockout stage, Tajikistan had another tough battle against the United Arab Emirates, who are eighth in Asia. However, it was dark horse Tajikistan who scored the first goal in this match. Taking advantage of a second chance from a corner kick in the 30th minute, Yurabayev found his teammate precisely in the box, and center back Hanonov overpowered the defender to push the ball into the net to put Tajikistan ahead, 1-0!
Unwilling to fall behind, the UAE then launched a frantic counterattack, but they could not find a good way to score against Tajikistan's strict defense. The UAE made substitutions to further strengthen their attack, but the tactics, too, began to expose more and more space in their defense. Tajikistan's counter-attacks, which often broke through the UAE's defense, could have killed the suspense of the game if their top striker Jalilov had not missed three consecutive scoring chances!
Tajikistan were also punished for missed chances in injury time. UAE naturalized international Saleh assisted his teammate's goal from a free kick and UAE escaped at the last minute to send the game into extra time for 30 minutes. Neither team created any good chances in the extra time due to the declining fitness of both teams and the match had to go into a brutal penalty shootout. Tajikistan played a huge role in deciding the fateful twelve-yard spot. All five of their penalty takers hit solidly to beat the UAE 5-3 and their opponents 6-4 on aggregate to reach the last eight of the Asian Cup!
Before that, many fans still had some comments about Tajikistan's advancement. Because the referee blew away a Chinese goal in the China vs Tajikistan match, Tajikistan had a chance to make a comeback and advance to the knockout stage. Now that the Tajiks are further into the last eight of the Asian Cup, those skeptical voices seem to be able to stop. They were fully deserving of qualification and China have only themselves to blame for their exit!
I wonder where this dark horse will end up going?
