Born in Lisbon, Portugal, Luis Figo is a retired famous Portuguese soccer player.
In his early career, Figo represented Portugal's youth teams, winning the UEFA European Junior Championships in 1989 and the World Youth Cup in 1991, before making his debut for the national team against Luxembourg in the same year. He played in the 1996 and 2000 UEFA European Championships and the 2002 FIFA World Cup in South Korea and Japan, but due to the strength of the national team at the time, he was never able to win a major tournament for Portugal.
After being defeated by Greece in the final of the 2004 UEFA European Football Championship, he announced that he was taking a break from international play, having already played 115 games for Portugal and scored 33 goals. However, in June 2005 he retracted his decision and played in the 2006 FIFA World Cup qualification matches against Slovakia and Estonia. After finishing fourth in the 2006 World Cup, Figo also announced his retirement from the national team.
