Fulham goalkeeper Leno recently explained in detail why he failed to make the German national team in an interview with Picture Post. He said that he had an in-depth conversation with Germany boss Nagelsmann and goalkeeping coach Andreas Kronberg, and made the decision to stay in London and continue training after learning that he had no chance of playing.
Said Leno: "I had a frank communication with Nagelsmann and Andreas Kronberg. They clearly told me that although I could be selected for the German team, I would not be given the opportunity to play. Therefore, I chose to stay in London to continue my training."
He further emphasized his professional attitude: "Nagelsmann knows that I am always there when they need me and that I can really help the team. I'm 32 years old and no longer a newcomer, and I've never asked for anything while Neuer and Ter Stegen were out. I've always tried very hard to do my own thing and never complained."
Leno also spoke about his strengths and experience, "After I've played in the Bundesliga, the Premier League and many international matches, Nagelsmann and Andreas Kronberg have been very aware of my strengths. It will always be a great honor for me to play for Germany and that remains my goal."
