Arsenal star Ian Wright recently called on Arsenal fans to give striker Jesus more support to help him regain his form. Wright said that despite Jesus' recent poor performances, the support of the fans is vital for him.
Wright said: 'I want to talk about Jesus because I think he needs our support very much at the moment. I know there's a feeling that we might have outgrown him, but remember, when he first joined Arsenal, he really lifted us. Arsenal are at a very high level now, but we will definitely need him again at some stage in the future, so I think it's very important for Arsenal fans to get behind him at the moment."
Wright emphasized, "The fans have to get behind him and not get frustrated with the way he's playing right now. He is fighting very hard and we will definitely need him in the future. We need to make sure we give him confidence as he has won the Premier League title four times and has been outstanding in many situations."
Wright also urged fans not to criticize Jesus too much: "Hearing some of the rumors and the reaction of the fans, I want to say, come on, get behind the guy and stand with him. He wants very much to perform well, but it just hasn't happened yet. He needs our support, he really, really needs it."
Despite being substituted in the 60th minute against Southampton, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said after the game that he was very pleased with the performances of both Jesus and Sterling, who made his first league start.
Arteta said: 'I was very pleased with their performance. When asked if they played well enough to prove they deserved to start for the Premier League title contenders, I said 'yes, we made the changes we had to make'. Everyone deserved to be on the pitch for the first half of the game and the result could have been very different."
"After that, we decided to change because we needed to change the dynamics on the field. We changed three players who are capable of doing that and they did help. But I am happy with everyone, including Jesus and Sterling."
