Satoru Hachimura is a Japanese professional basketball player born in Toyama Prefecture to a West African Beninese father and a Japanese mother.He was drafted by the Washington Wizards in the first round, ninth overall, of the 2019 NBA Draft. He currently plays for the Los Angeles Lakers of the NBA, with the position of power forward on the court.
As a child, Hachimura was more interested in baseball and track and field, and was physically fit enough to represent his alma mater in the 5th grade sprinting event at the National Elementary School Land Athletic Exchange Conference in 2008.
On April 15, 2019, Satoru Hachimura announced that he would forgo his final year of collegiate eligibility and declared for the 2019 NBA Draft, where he was selected in the first round, ninth overall, by the Washington Wizards. Satoru Hachimura is the second Japanese-born player to be drafted into the NBA after Kyozo Okayama and the first Japanese player to be selected in the first round.On October 23, 2019, Satoru Hachimura made his NBA debut with a double-double (14 points, 10 rebounds) in a 100-108 loss to the Dallas Mavericks.On December 1, 2019, Satoru Hachimura scored a career-long double-double (14 points, 10 rebounds) in a 125-150 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers for a career-high 30 points with nine rebounds, three assists and one steal.
Traded by the Washington Wizards to the Los Angeles Lakers on January 24, 2023, the Wizards received Kendrick Nunn and three future second round picks.
