According to a recent report by the Telegraph, a 20-year-old law student, Sohail Ali, was convicted of posting offensive messages on social media, calling Arsenal player Saka a racist name, but ultimately avoided jail for claiming that he did not intend to be racist.
Last May, after Arsenal's loss to Nottingham Forest, Sohail Ali reportedly posted an audio message on social media calling Saka a "monkey" with a racial slur starting with the word "N" and referring to him as "fucking black trash". The act sparked widespread concern and condemnation.
Sohail Ali is an Arsenal fan and a student at City University who, like Saka, is of Nigerian descent. In court, he admitted to sending the offensive message over a public communications network. However, he claimed that he did not intend to racially discriminate but was motivated by an emotional outburst.
Kieran O'Donnell, chairman of Westminster Magistrates' Court, said in his judgment, "Your solicitor said that you did not intend to be racist but anyone who heard this would have thought it was a racial insult. However, taking into account your previous good behavior, lack of previous convictions and demonstrated remorse, you were sentenced to 12 months' conditional discharge and to pay a fine of £111."
The loss was a crushing blow for Arsenal, as it gave Manchester City an early 22-23 Premier League title win. And for Sohail Ali, the incident has taught him a profound lesson. Though he avoided jail time, the act could have long-term consequences for his reputation and future.
