In an interview with DAZN, soccer great Owen spoke highly of current Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe and believes he has all the right ingredients to be England manager.
Irving said, "I've said before that I think Eddie Howe is a terrific coach. The way he talks, the control he has over the team shows that he is a very good coach. Someone like that would be absolutely perfect for the England team. However, the reality is that he now has a full-time job and is very unlikely to coach England."
Speaking about the potential candidates for the England manager's job, Owen mentioned a couple of highly regarded names. He firstly mentions Casley, who is currently serving as interim head coach, as someone to watch as well. Meanwhile, he also mentioned former Brighton manager Porter, arguing that he was a huge success at Brighton, and that although his time at Chelsea wasn't as good as he would have liked, that shouldn't completely negate his coaching ability.
Owen further stated, "I would never judge a manager who leaves after a few months at a top club like Chelsea, because as things stand it would be almost impossible. As many other great coaches have shown, I think Potter has a lot more to offer."
Additionally, Owen cited former England internationals such as Lampard and Gerrard, arguing that while they may not have a great public image, they are definitely learning how to coach and that their past achievements on the pitch and knowledge of the England team's culture make them potentially suitable candidates for the job.
Finally, Owen re-emphasized his appreciation for Eddie Howe and said that while he may be his ideal candidate, given the reality of the situation, Porter may be the next more realistic option for England.
