At the training camp of the Spanish national team, EFE news agency conducted an exclusive interview with striker Joselu. In the interview, Joselu paid tribute to Iniesta, who just retired, and shared his feelings and expectations of continuing to play for his country after leaving Europe.
Talking about Iniesta's retirement, Joselu lamented, "Iniesta is a legend in the history of soccer, and his career has been full of splendor. He left a deep mark as a benchmark for midfielders, both in Spain and around the world. In particular, his goal in the 2010 World Cup final will always be remembered. We are saddened by his retirement, but we want to thank him for everything he has done for soccer."
Asked if Iniesta is the best player in the history of Spanish soccer, Joselu said, "Iniesta undoubtedly has a place in the best XI. Playing alongside legendary midfielders such as Xavi and Xavi Alonso, he showed exceptional talent. At the same time, players of his generation such as Ramos and Villa were also extremely good. And now, as we win the Europa League and UEFA Europa League, players like Carvajal and Rodri continue to write history."
Speaking about the changes he has undergone since leaving Europe to join Qatar's Al Gharafa Sports, Joselu said that he has adapted very well: "My family and I are very happy, we made the right decision. Qatar is a fast developing country and life is very easy. Although the level of La Liga is different from here, Al Gharafa Sports is developing rapidly by signing foreign players and has the potential to compete with neighboring leagues."
On whether or not he will be able to return to the national team after leaving Europe, Joselu said, "When I was first called up in September, I didn't think I would be able to come back. But I always thought in my heart that it would be great to come back and enjoy my past experiences. I proved that I can compete at a very high level even in Qatar. I think players are all equipped to contribute to the national team even if they change their league or country."
Talking about the reasons why he was not dropped by the national team despite being in a similar situation to Nacho, Joselu said, "I felt 100% trust from my coach. I know he has been following my game and I am grateful for the opportunity he has given me. I will continue to work hard to contribute more to the national team."
In addition, Joselu spoke about the leadership of the national team, "Although I am not the captain, I will try to contribute what I know and what I have learned in the last few years. If there is a discussion that requires me to speak, I will not hesitate to say what I think."
On Morata's return, Joselu welcomed: "Morata is our captain and benchmark. He is eager to continue competing and fighting for the national team. We look forward to seeing him in the UEFA Europa League and hope that he will captain Spain in the next World Cup."
Finally, Joselu spoke about scheduling and national team games, "Representing your country is the best thing a player can experience. I'm not going to fake an injury to avoid playing. Although the schedule is tight, every player has his own choices and decisions. I hope the fans appreciate all the players who have worked hard for the national team."
