Raúl González Blanco's outstanding performances for Real Madrid in 1994 led to his selection for the Spanish Under-18 national team, with which he played in the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. Raul made his debut for the national team in the Czech Republic on October 9 of the same year, wearing the number 10 shirt, and has been a key player in the national team ever since. 1998 saw him help his club win the European Champions Cup, and he then made his national team debut in an international soccer tournament, the 1998 FIFA World Cup. In Spain's first match, Raul helped his team take the lead over Nigeria with his great shot, but the opponents eventually scored two goals in a row and turned Spain into a 3-2 winner. Spain then drew with Paraguay and beat Bulgaria, but were eliminated after finishing third in the group.
At the 2000 European Championships, Raúl once again led his team to the quarter-finals where they met France. In the first half, Zinedine Zidane scored a direct free kick, then Gazka Mendieta equalized for Spain, but Djokovic's goal put France back in front.
