Why four English teams are in the World Cup

Why does England have four teams at the Internationals

Any FIFA member country (region) can send a team to register for the tournament. Therefore, it is not accurate to assume that the World Cup is a country vs. country tournament; it is actually an association vs. association tournament, except that most countries have only one association, so it looks as if most of the tournaments are country vs. country.

The United Kingdom, officially known as the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, is a Western European island nation consisting of England, Wales and Scotland on the island of Great Britain, Northern Ireland in the northeastern part of the island of Ireland, and a series of dependent islands. Because England is the largest and most powerful overall, and London, the capital of the United Kingdom, is also in England, we customarily refer to it as England. The history of the United Kingdom is glorious for England, but for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, it is blood and tears and humiliation. Because the formation of the United Kingdom was the invasion and conquest of Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland by England. To this day, the people of Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland warn themselves and their descendants never to submit to the English.

Each of the 4 lower regions of the UK has a relatively independent government, parliament and other organizations. Instead of a national soccer association as in most countries, each of the 4 regions has an independent soccer association and all are recognized members of FIFA. As a result, England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales are all eligible to participate in the European qualifiers for the World Cup.

At the beginning of the establishment of FIFA, when the United Kingdom, as the birthplace of modern soccer, was quite powerful, the arrogant English were even reluctant to play matches with teams from other countries. FIFA, in order to invite the UK to participate in the World Championships, then agreed to the UK's request to allow each of the four member associations below it - England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland - to compete, a tradition that continues to this day.

that's all...
