Bell began his playing career after graduating from high school, and on April 17, 2006, he made his Southampton debut at the age of 16 years and 275 days, becoming the second-youngest Southampton player to make his debut in the history of the club.
With Southampton eliminated in the first round of the Championship play-offs, Premier League teams such as Manchester United and Arsenal expressed strong interest in the Welsh talent. Eventually Gareth Bale chose to join London club Tottenham Hotspur, led by Jol, completing the transfer on May 25, 2007, signing a four-year deal. The transfer fee was 5 million pounds, but with a rider, there was a chance that the fee could eventually be increased to 10 million pounds if Bale performed well.
