In a recent interview, former Atletico Madrid player Ricardo Lopez gave his opinion on the previous incident of Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois having debris thrown at him by fans during the Madrid derby.
Ricardo Lopez began by pointing out that the way Courtois handled the incident was not appropriate. He recalled, "When Real Madrid scored, Courtois turned towards the stands to celebrate, which seemed a bit redundant. He then looked towards the stands again. Fans can get a bit emotional at soccer matches, but as long as we make sure they don't throw objects that could cause serious injury to the players, it should be understandable. For example, items such as lighters do not usually cause serious injury."
However, Ricardo Lopez expressed his displeasure with Courtois' next action, "I think it's very hard to see what Courtois did by picking up a lighter and walking to midfield to show it to the referee. Especially considering that he played for Atletico Madrid when the fans were very kind to him." He believes that such behavior could further inflame the fans.
Meanwhile, Ricardo Lopez admitted that the fans' behavior of throwing objects into the stadium was uncalled for: "Of course, fans shouldn't throw objects into the stadium. But we've all been through this and we can't let it become normalized." He emphasized that soccer stadiums are now safer and that we should work together to avoid escalation and prevent acts of violence.
Speaking about how to avoid similar incidents, Ricardo Lopez agreed with Atletico Madrid manager Simeone, "We should try to play without provocation and focus on the game." He believes that players may sometimes not realize that fans are very intense and can become nervous or even emotional. In this case, if the players still go on to provoke the fans, then they have to bear the consequences of the fans possibly not being able to control themselves.
