The Australian Professional Players Union recently released a video featuring 23 members of the Australian women's national team speaking out together, criticizing the pay disparity between men and women in football.
The Women's Football World Cup will be held on July 20, 2023, which will be co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand.
In a statement from the Australian women's football players, they said, "736 footballers have had the privilege of representing their country on the highest stage of the World Cup, yet many are still denied the basic right to organize and collectively bargain. Collective bargaining allows us to now be treated in the same way as the Australian men's national team, with one exception:FIFA still only offers women's soccer a quarter of the prize money that men's soccer receives compared to the same results."
At the end of the video statement, they added: "The sisters of the Australian Premier Women's Football League are still working to promote the professionalization of women's soccer leagues across the globe so that they can't play soccer on the side like they used to."
The total prize money for this year's Women's World Cup is $110 million, a three-fold increase from 2019, but still significantly behind the $440 million for the Men's World Cup in Qatar.
