Beckham was born at Whipple Cross University Hospital in Leytonstone, London, England to David Edward Allan Ted Beckham, a kitchen mechanic and Manchester United supporter, and Sandra Georgina West Beckham, a hairdresser.
Beckham used to play soccer at Leighway Park in Chingford when he was young, and later attended Chase Lane Primary School and Chingford Foundation School. In an interview, Beckham mentioned that in elementary school, whenever his teacher asked him what he would like to do when he grows up, he always replied "I want to be a soccer player", but most of the teachers did not think so, and would then ask him what he really wanted to do, and at that time Beckham's idea was already quite clear, he had to become a professional soccer player! Beckham had a clear idea that he had to become a professional soccer player.
Beckham's maternal grandfather was Jewish, and Beckham would describe himself as "half-Jewish", and in his autobiography he has stated that he probably had more contact with Judaism as a child than with any other religion. In another book, "Both Feet on the Ground", it is stated that as a teenager he often attended church services with his parents and two young sisters.
His parents are big supporters of Manchester United, and from time to time make the long journey from London to Old Trafford to watch their home matches. Beckham inherited his parents' love of Manchester United and one of his favorite sports is soccer. Beckham attended one of Bobby Charlton's soccer academies in Manchester, won a talent competition to train at Barcelona, and spent the rest of his childhood playing for his father's local team, Legwick Rangers, at youth level. Beckham even played as Manchester United's mascot during a match against West Ham United in 1986.
The young Beckham went on to try out for various teams, including local clubs Leyton Orient and Norwich City, and took part in an elite soccer academy run by Tottenham Hotspur, which was therefore the first professional club he formally represented, but Tottenham did not accept him as a youth player. During his two years with the Brimington Rovers youth team, Beckham was voted 1990 Under-15 Player of the Year and enrolled at the Brimington Preparatory Academy, eventually signing a schoolboy agreement with Manchester United on his 14th birthday, and on July 8, 1991, the two sides formally signed a contract for a youth training program. During this time, he assisted Manchester United's youth and reserve teams in winning the 1992 FA Youth Cup, finishing as runners-up in the 1993 FA Youth Cup and winning the 1994 Reserve League.
