After his retirement, Zidane appeared only occasionally in charity matches in his personal capacity. Since then, he has worked as a consultant, director, assistant coach and youth coach for Real Madrid. As to whether he would become the first team coach, Zidane once said, "I have no plans, but anything can happen in the future. On January 4, 2016, Real Madrid officially announced that Zinedine Zidane would replace Rafael Benítez, who had just been sacked, as the head coach. In the Champions League final, Zidane scored a controversial offside goal to seal a 5-3 penalty shootout victory over Atletico Madrid after a 1-1 draw in legal time and extra time. Zinedine Zidane has now helped Real Madrid win the European Championships as a player, assistant coach and manager, and became the seventh man to win the UEFA Champions League in both his playing and coaching careers, winning the La Liga title in 2016/17 after a five-year absence and becoming the first team to defend the UEFA Champions League after the change in format, and winning the UEFA Champions League for the third year in a row in 2018.
On May 31, 2018, Zinedine Zidane resigned as Real Madrid manager.
On March 11, 2019, Real Madrid announced the sacking of Solari, with Zinedine Zidane taking over to lead the team through the rest of that season and the next three seasons until June 30, 2022. After a season of reorganization of the squad, Zidane led the Galacticos to the Spanish Super Cup and La Liga pennant in the 2019/20 season.
On May 27, 2021, Real Madrid announced that Zinedine Zidane would no longer be the team's manager.
