Zidane's playing days
Zidane was born in Marseille, France, of Algerian Kabyle descent. Zidane started his playing career with Cannes at the age of 13. He made his Ligue 1 debut for the club in 1988 (when he was 16 years old), joined Bordeaux in 1992 and helped the club reach the European Cup final in 1996.
In July 1996, Zinedine Zidane moved from the French soccer team Bordeaux FC to the Italian Juventus with a salary of 12 million francs per year. Although he wore the No. 21 jersey, he quickly became the centerpiece of Juventus' midfield like Platini, and from '96 to '98 he played for a Juventus team that won various tournaments, including the Serie A title and a runner-up finish in the UEFA Champions League.
In 2001, Zidane joined La Liga club Real Madrid for a world record transfer fee. This was also the second peak of his career. There, he joined a large number of the world's best players - Ronaldo, Carlos, Figo, Beckham, Raul - to provide fans with one spectacular game after another. During his time at Real Madrid he won the La Liga title, and in one of the most memorable club matches of Zidane's career, a half-turned volley in the 2002 UEFA Champions League final between Glasgow's Hampden Park and Leverkusen's "World Cup Wave" helped his team win the title. In 2006, Zidane Zinedine Zidane completed his Real Madrid contract and said goodbye to soccer.
