Bell's childhood
How Bale's soccer talent was discovered
Born in Cardiff, the capital of Wales, England, Bale is the nephew of Keith Packer, a former goal scorer for local rivals Cardiff City. Bale's soccer talent was already prominent at an early age, with his left foot being particularly proficient, and he tended to display composure and confidence when controlling the ball. Bale first came to the attention of Southampton scouts when he played in a five-a-side tournament for Cardiff Civil Service Football Club when he was nine years old in elementary school.
Until Bell entered high school, he played rugby, field field hockey, and long-distance running in addition to soccer[3]. Because of his soccer skills, the school's physical education teacher, Gwen Morris, had to make special rules for Bell, including not allowing him to kick the ball with his left foot or to pass the ball once he had touched it. By then Bell had begun training at the Southampton Satellite Academy in Bath, Somerset. At the age of 16, he helped the school's soccer team win a regional tournament called the Cardiff and Weir Senior Cup. When Bell graduated from high school in the summer of 2005, he justifiably achieved a Grade A in his English Baccalaureate Physical Education subject and was awarded a Sports Scholarship, which was presented by Bell's Physical Education teacher, Maurice, in a speech at the ceremony:
"Gareth had a strong determination and good character and qualifications to reach his goals in life. He is one of the most selfless people I know, so I'm glad to have coached him."
