In a UEFA A League match, the Dutch team challenged the Hungarian team away from home and finally drew 1-1 with 10 men. Goal scorer Dumfries expressed his dissatisfaction with Van Dyke's red card decision and talked about his team's performance in the match in a post-match interview.
In this game, Dutch defender Van Dyke was shown the first yellow card in the 76th minute of the game for expressing his disagreement with the referee's decision. He was then sent off in the 79th minute after receiving a second yellow card for a foul, turning two yellows into one red. Dumfries, who took over the captain's armband after van Dijk's sending off, scored the equalizer for the Netherlands.
After the game, Dumfries questioned the red card call on Van Dyke: "Van Dyke didn't deserve a second yellow card, I think he touched the ball." His goal helped the Dutch equalize with one man less, and Dumfries became the man of the match.
Speaking about the overall performance of the game, Dumfries said, "The Dutch didn't play well. In the first half we lacked energy and confrontation and didn't play as well as we should have." However, in the second half, the Dutch performance improved significantly, with Dumfries noting, "We played much better in the second half, with more running and a faster tempo of possession. Although the game was frustrating because their defense stayed compact and the midfield defended well, we showed a lot of resilience."
Speaking about the goals his team conceded, Dumfries said, "On a quick counter attack we lost possession and they took their chances. But in the second half we ran with more agility and energy, something we didn't do in the first half." He felt that the 1-1 draw result was ultimately justified even though the Dutch failed to win.
Finally, Dumfries re-emphasized the issue of Van Dyke's red card decision: "I don't think Van Dyke's second yellow card was justified, he did touch the ball. But it's great that we showed a lot of resilience even though we were down a man. It was a really good moment for me to help the team in that way."
