In a program, soccer pundits Roy Keane and Ian Wright discussed the performance of Liverpool player Trent Alexander-Arnold. The two commentators recognized Arnold's technical ability and decision-making, but questioned his defensive performance.
Keane began by recognizing Arnold's technical brilliance, especially at free kicks. He said, "Arnold's technique is excellent, you can see his supporting foot, the technique is fantastic. The keeper didn't stand a chance against his free-kick, I'm usually harsh on keepers but I'll let him off the hook this time."
However, Keane turned the tables and criticized Arnold's defensive abilities. He believes Arnold has done a very poor job defensively and even questioned his suitability to play in the right-back position. "You give Trent time because his decision-making ability and the quality of his passing is excellent, but I still can't believe how bad he is defensively. He's definitely going to be punished for a defensive performance like that against a stronger team." As an example, Keane said, "If you saw his defensive performance against Greece the other night, it looked as if he'd never played at right back before!"
Unlike Keane's harsh criticism, Wright was more encouraging towards Arnold. He believes that Arnold is a very good player from a creativity point of view, although he lacks in defense. However, Wright also doesn't think Arnold will occupy the left back position for a long time. "I don't think he's done anything defensively to make you think, 'Well, that's the position he's going to play.' But from a creativity point of view, Lee Carsley wants as many creative players in his squad as possible. However, I can't see Arnold frequenting the left-back position."
