De Bruyne has represented the Belgian national youth teams in the U-18, Belgian U-19 and Belgian U-21 age classes. He made his debut for the adult team on August 11, 2010 against Finland, where the team lost 0-1.
De Bruyne became a regular member of the national team and scored four goals in the 2014 World Cup qualification campaign that saw Belgium reach the World Cup final round for the first time in 12 years.
De Bruyne started for the Belgian national team at the 2018 FIFA World Cup and was voted the best player of the tournament in the last eight when he received a pass from Romelu Lukaku and kicked the ball into the goal, leading his team to knock out the traditional powerhouse Brazil 2:1 and reach the semifinals. Belgium finished third in the tournament after losing 0-1 to champions France in the semifinals, and De Bruyne was named to the tournament's fan-voted Fantasy XI.
In the second round of the group stage of the UEFA European Football Championship 2020, Belgium played against Denmark in the second half of the tournament, De Bruyne's crucial goal led his team to a comeback to win 2:1. Belgium went on to lose to Italy in the last eight of the tournament, 1:2.
De Bruyne started all three games of the 2022 World Cup as Belgium were eliminated in the group stage.
