De Bruyne's mother is Belgian, born in Burundi and has also lived in Côte d'Ivoire. His hometown of Drongen is a municipality in the Dutch-speaking region of Belgium, Vrannesgenet. In addition to his native Dutch, De Bruyne also knows French, English and German. De Bruyne has been in a relationship with Michel Lacroix since 2014. The couple married in June 2017 and have three children.
His autobiography, entitled "Keep It Simple", was published in October 2014 by Borgerhoff & Lamberigts. In his autobiography he mentions that his own girlfriend at the time betrayed him and chose Thibaut Courtois. De Bruyne wrote in his autobiography, "Although I still can't believe that Thibaut Courtois would do such a thing, we continue to work together in soccer."
De Bruyne was an ambassador for the 2014 Special Olympics in Antwerp and participated in a controversial ad campaign via his personal Instagram account. With the slogan (in Dutch), "If I looked like this, would you still be my fan?" , De Bruyne was depicted as a man with Down syndrome.
On top of that, De Bruyne is a supporter of Dutch-born Formula 1 driver Max Verstappen, whose mother is Belgian.
