Gerrard's first start for England came against Ukraine on May 31, 2000 under Kevin Keegan, just 18 months and 44 games after his first start for the Liverpool first team.
Gerrard was one of three Liverpool players to score his first international goal in a monumental World Cup qualifier against Germany in September 2001, winning 5-1 as the visitors. England progressed to the 2002 World Cup, but Gerrard was forced to withdraw from the national team due to a groin injury, a problem that had plagued him since he was a youth when he had surgery.
In the 2004 European Football Championships, Steven Gerrard was finally able to make his mark on the international scene, scoring a penalty in England's first match against France, after a rebound pass was intercepted by Henry and dropped by James. This time Staines scored another goal to give France a 2-1 win. England finished second after three group stage matches, and Gerrard also scored against Switzerland. However, England were beaten by Portugal in the next round and Gerrard was substituted in the 81st minute.
Gerrard was injured a few days before the 2006 World Cup was held in Germany. The team advised him to miss England's opening match, but he felt he was ready for his first World Cup match (he missed the 2002 World Cup due to injury), and he ended up being in the starting lineup for the 1-0 win over Paraguay.
Gerrard was popularly regarded as England's first choice to succeed David Beckham as captain. Gerrard's 47 internationals made him a more experienced member of the national team (rival Terry had only 29), yet McCullum chose to hand the captain's armband to Terry, with Gerrard becoming vice-captain.On February 5, 2008 the new England manager Fabio Capello adopted a captain's rotation system, and chose Gerrard for the captaincy. In September of the same year, Capello decided to hand over the England national team captaincy to Terry, while Gerrard's vice-captaincy was replaced by Rio Ferdinand.
On March 3, 2010, in Egypt, as Terry was stripped of the national team captaincy and his replacement, Rio Ferdinand, was not selected due to injury, Capello handed the captain's armband to Steven Gerrard. 2010 World Cup, Steven Gerrard became the captain of England as Rio Ferdinand withdrew from the team due to injury. However, the team's performance in the World Cup was not as good as it should have been, with the team stopping at the one-eighth final. Gerrard scored one goal in the tournament.
In May 2012 he became captain of the England national team.
England exited the group stage of the 2014 World Cup tournament, and on July 22, 2014, Gerrard announced his retirement from the national team, ending his national team career.
