Beckham's highly publicized marriage to Spice Girls member Victoria has made the couple a prime target for British tabloids, earning them the nickname "Posh and Becks". Beckham has three sons and a daughter, Brooklyn Joseph (born March 4, 1999 in Portland Hospital, London), Romeo James (born September 1, 2002 in Portland Hospital, London), Cruz David (born February 20, 2005 in Hospital Internacional de Madrid) and Harper Sewan. Beckham became well known in North America as a result of the movie I Love Beckham, which depicted a young British Indian Sikh girl who admired Beckham and became a soccer player by ruling out issues of family, race, religion, and gender.

Beckham was the BBC Sports Personality of the Year in 2001 and received an OBE in the Queen's Honours List in the summer of 2003, and is a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.

In May 2003 Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson banned Beckham from wearing headbands on the pitch, feeling it gave an effeminate impression. The same year his reputation was further affirmed when Staffordshire University offered a 12-week university course with Beckham as the subject of study called Football Culture.

In April 2004, it was widely reported in the British tabloids that Beckham was having an affair with his former personal assistant, Rebecca Loos. A week later, Loos' number two, Malaysian-Australian model Sarah Marbeck, also claimed to have had an affair with Beckham. Beckham claimed that the tabloid's allegations were not only ridiculous but also unsubstantiated and has instructed a lawyer to look into possible legal action.

In July 2005, Beckham helped campaign in Singapore for London's bid to host the 2012 Summer Olympics, which was successful. In the same year, Beckham also made cameo appearances in the movies "Ballon d'Or" and "Ballon d'Or 2".

Beckham officially became the owner of a Major League Soccer (MLS) team in January 2018, and will organize a new team in Miami, United States, which will officially join the league for the 2020 season.
