Henry's achievements with the national team include winning the 1998 World Cup, the 2000 UEFA European Championship and the 2003 Confederations Cup, and in October 2007 he became France's all-time leading goalscorer, breaking Platini's record for national goals.
Henry also had a successful career with the French national team. He started his international career in June 1997, and while playing for Monaco, he was called up to the France Under-21 national team for the 1997 World Youth Cup. Within just four months, French manager Aimé Jacquet called him up to the first team. Henry made his debut for the national team at the age of 20 in a 2-1 friendly win over South Africa, and his performances pleased Aimé Jacquet enough to call him up to the French squad for the 1998 World Cup. Although Henri's international credentials were still unknown, he eventually became the team's leading scorer with three goals in the final round.
Henry was a member of the French team at the 2000 UEFA European Football Championships, where he scored three goals, including one in the quarter-finals against Portugal, and was once again France's leading scorer. In the final against Italy, Henri won his second international title with a golden goal scored in extra time by Thérèseguet.
Henry, who became the main player of the French team in the 2002 World Cup, unexpectedly "graduated" early. The defending French team was unable to score a single goal in the three group stage matches, and left the tournament in a state of dismay.
Henry returned to the national team for the 2003 Confederations Cup. Despite the absence of big stars such as Zinedine Zidane and Vieira, France still managed to win the tournament, and Henry was voted the best player in three out of the five matches in the tournament by FIFA's Technical Study Group. In the final, Henry scored the golden goal in extra time to help France beat Cameroon 1:0 and take home the trophy. In addition, Henry won two individual awards at the tournament, the Adidas Ballon d'Or for the most outstanding player of the tournament and the Adidas Golden Boot for the top scorer of the tournament, with Henry scoring a total of four goals in the tournament.
In the 2004 UEFA European Championships, Henry played in all of France's matches and scored two goals. France beat England in the group stage, but were beaten 0-1 in the quarter-finals by Greece, the eventual winners of the tournament, and Henry was a natural starter in the 2006 World Cup. He played as a single arrow, but despite France's early struggles, Henry ended up being one of the top scorers of the tournament. Henry was on the ten-man shortlist for the tournament's Ballon d'Or, but the honor went to teammate Zinedine Zidane, who announced his retirement after the tournament, and he was also named to the 2006 FIFA World XI.
On October 13, 2007, Henry scored his 41st national team goal against the Faroe Islands, tying Platini's record for the most goals scored by a national team. Four days later, in a match against Lithuania at the Stade de Beverly, Henry scored twice in the closing stages of the match and became the new holder of the national team's record for goals scored, while on June 3, 2008, in a match against Colombia, Henry reached his 100th match for his country and became the sixth French player to reach this milestone.
Henry missed France's first match in the 2008 European Football Championships, which resulted in France finishing at the bottom of the pack of four teams and going out of the tournament.
Henry was replaced as captain by Ivar in the 2010 World Cup final round and failed to get a start in the tournament. After the 2002 World Cup, the team exited the group stage again.
On May 15, 2010, Henry issued a statement at a press conference to join the New York Red Bulls, announcing his official retirement from the French national team, ending a 13-year career as an international player.
