Howard Webb, head of the Premier League Refereeing Company, has revealed a significant drop in video assistant referee (VAR) errors in the Premier League this season during an appearance on the podcast Stick to Football. According to Webb, VAR errors have been reduced by 80% this season, an improvement verified by an independent panel.
Webb said, "There have been 80 percent fewer VAR errors this season, and I don't think we've done a good job of managing expectations when it comes to VAR. We realize that VAR always excels in the obvious situations, the ones where you can see the error at a glance. We've been pretty good at spotting those situations most of the time and making the right calls."
To further improve the accuracy of VAR, the Premier League Refereeing Company has created an independent panel of former players. This panel judges every penalty awarded by VAR on a weekly basis to ensure its fairness and accuracy. According to this panel, which is independent of the PGMOL (Premier League Refereeing Company), the VAR has only made two errors this season, compared to 10 at the same time last year.
Webb also revealed that the delay in VAR penalties has also improved significantly. Last season, the average delay in determining penalties via VAR was 70 seconds per game, while this year it has been reduced to 25 seconds. Webb said of this, "We've done better and that could change, but we're not going to be complacent. It's very important to me that penalties become faster because it makes the game flow better."
Speaking about how to further improve the use of VAR, Webb said, "I say to referees, don't think too long. If you see a situation that comes out of nowhere, then get involved. But if you have to think about it too much and analyze it too many times, then say 'check done' because we will leave it to the referee on the field. That's why the term 'referee's call' is useful; it emphasizes the authority of the on-field referee in the final decision."
